Dr. Chiang is recognized for developing measurement strategies to quantify properties of dental composite restorations (“tooth-colored fillings”). He developed a Standard Reference Instrument to accurately measure material properties during light-curing, led stakeholders in developing a documentary standard based on that measurement technique, and addressed long-standing conflicts on the role of light-curing protocols on material properties. This body of work enables dental material manufacturers to rationally improve material properties to increase clinical lifetimes of dental restorations.
