FIRES START WITH SIMPLE INGREDIENTS—fuel, oxygen, and a spark—but combustion scientists still struggle to understand the complex ways those ingredients interact. This month, we look at two government-run labs that study fires under controlled conditions to determine how building materials influence structural fires and how wind, terrain, and moisture affect wildland fires.
