MML Project Leader Enrico Lucon, from the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division, led an ASTM Task Group in the development of an Annex to ASTM E1820 (Fracture Toughness Testing), which covers the use of electric potential difference (EPD) methods to monitor crack growth in fracture toughness specimens. The methods have been used since the mid-1980s, but never formalized in an ASTM standard due to a lack of technical consensus inside the scientific community. The Task Group was originally formed in 2013, and after five years of technical discussions at ASTM meetings, several ballots, and the completion of an analytical round-robin, the new EPD E1820 Annex was successfully balloted in September 2018 and will be incorporated into the revised E1820 standard before the end of the year.
