National Aviation History Month: NIST Chemist Wins Air Races

In 1927 chemist Johanna Busse became the first female section chief at NIST when she was appointed to head the Thermometry section. Busse was also a licensed pilot, and in 1935 she won the Washington Air Derby ten and twenty-five mile air races. That year, there were only 410 female pilots in the United States, out of a total of 14,505 licensed pilots.
