Now Posted: State-by-State Baldrige Impact Data for 2016

The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program (BPEP) at NIST released data this week that document the scope of services provided to U.S. organizations in every sector and nearly every state through the national network of Baldrige-based nonprofit programs that form the Alliance for Performance Excellence. The Alliance is a key partner of BPEP in promoting the long-term success of U.S. businesses and organizations in other sectors through improvements based on the Baldrige Excellence Framework (including the Criteria for Performance Excellence). Alliance member programs offer performance assessments, training, and other services to organizations in their states, regions, or particular sector based on the Baldrige framework and related resources produced by BPEP.

The newly updated data on the Baldrige website are searchable by state and highlight the scope and key impacts of each Alliance program. Over the past 20 years, the Alliance programs together have trained more than 30,000 volunteers (called examiners) to use the Baldrige Criteria to evaluate the performance of organizations that submit applications for feedback and recognition. The Baldrige Program estimates that examiners from Alliance programs today collectively volunteer about $30 million worth of their time annually to prepare for and provide Baldrige-based performance assessments and other volunteer services to help improve U.S. businesses as well as health care, education, and nonprofit organizations.

By searching the recently posted data by state, one can find out the number of organizations from the area that applied for the national Baldrige Award in recent years, the economic value for the state of its Baldrige Award-applicant organizations, the number of Baldrige examiners from the state, the financial value of those examiners' volunteer service in helping organizations improve through Baldrige assessments, and the names and sectors of organizations from the state that have been honored as national Baldrige Award recipients. Also featured are profiles of national and state-level Baldrige award-winning organizations now serving as role models for others. For example, a search of the impact data for Texas reveals the following:

• 74 Texas applicants for the Baldrige Award (2005–2015)
• 4 Texas award applicants in 2014 represent 8,340 jobs, 14 work locations, over $1.78 billion in revenues/budgets, and an estimated 3.38 million customers served.
• 42 Baldrige examiners from Texas volunteered over $638,000 in services in 2015.

The latest data on Baldrige in Texas also reveal that the state boasts 17 organizations that have received the national Baldrige Award since 1990. (This means Texas has produced nearly 17 percent of the 102 Baldrige Award recipients from all states to date.) The 17 national role models from Texas include 5 manufacturers; for example, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control received the Baldrige Award in 2012. Texas-based Baldrige Award recipients also include 7 small businesses, 2 health care organizations, 1 city (nonprofit), and the first (and so far only) community college in the nation to earn the Baldrige Award (Richland College). A sample profile of Hill Country Memorial—one of the two health care organizations in Texas that received Baldrige Awards in 2014— highlights its successful performance results.

Searching the data on Baldrige in Texas also produces a description of the Alliance program serving organizations in Texas, the Quality Texas Foundation; a list of organizations recognized in recent years by the Quality Texas Foundation with the Texas Award for Performance Excellence that the state-level program administers; and a profile of one of those Texas award recipients, Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital, a subsidiary of Baylor Health Care System.

Finally, search results for Baldrige in Texas include a list of the 12 long-term care and assisted-living providers in the state honored by the sector-specific, Baldrige-based American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) National Quality Award in 2015.

The Baldrige Program also annually updates and posts on its website impact data of its assessment and training services at the national level. Those data show that through 2015, the Baldrige Program has trained nearly 9,750 examiners in using the Baldrige framework and evaluation processes. In 2015 alone, 349 Baldrige examiners volunteered roughly $5.3 million in services. Baldrige examiners take knowledge on how to improve organizations using the Baldrige framework and evaluation process to their own organizations. There have been Baldrige examiners and award recipient organizations from nearly every state and the District of Columbia.
