Shocks and Consequences: Resilience Lessons Learned from Superstorm Sandy and the Boston Marathon Bombing

Escalating losses associated with unexpected events such as natural disasters, terrorism, and the mounting risk associated with cyber-attacks on physical infrastructure are focusing attention on new approaches to reducing damages and mitigating consequences. Whereas the dominant paradigm in recent years has centered around risk analysis to inform prevention and protection measures, lately Washington has placed new emphasis on bolstering resilience. Professor Flynn's presentation will identify how lessons learned from Superstorm Sandy and the Boston Marathon Bombing can inform what can be done to advance infrastructure and community resilience.
