Send for the Doctor--Surgery and Medical Care During the Civil War

The lecture and slide show will focus on Dr. Edward Stonestreet's life and medical career as they related to the Civil War in which he served the U.S. Army. A Montgomery County native, Stonestreet was educated at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (1850-1852) and had a Rockville practice. While his Civil War service of about one year total was a relatively small part of his nearly 52-year medical career, he had historic connections to significant Civil War medical persons and events, including the battle of Antietam. The lecture also will discuss Stonestreet's medical practice after the War, his comfort with surgery and treating injuries, and the fate of a few of his patients who were war veterans. Examples of actual tools of the trade will be shown and demonstrated and local historic Civil War sites will be referenced.

Clarence Hickey is the author of the book, Send for the Doctor: The Life and Times of Dr. Edward E. Stonestreet. A limited number of  books will be available for review and purchase after the lecture.
