On December 1, 2014, NIST will host a panel discussion on Global Privacy Perspectives featuring: Ann Cavoukian, Executive Director, the Privacy & Big Data Institute at Ryerson University; Bojana Bellamy, President of Hunton & William's LLP Centre for Information Policy Leadership; and Jessica Rich, Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission.
The NIST ITL Invited Lecture Series in Usable Privacy explores various aspects of privacy in the new digital age from the user's perspective. Invited speakers address topics ranging from user-centered definitions of privacy with respect to electronic data, the economics of privacy, and social and national security considerations related to privacy. The lectures offer insights from relevant work in the privacy domain concerning user experience, perception, cognition and behavior.

Executive Director, The Privacy & Big Data Institute at Ryerson University
Dr. Ann Cavoukian is recognized as one of the world's leading privacy experts. Appointed as the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada in 1997, Dr. Cavoukian served for an unprecedented three terms as Commissioner. In that time, she elevated the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner from a novice regulatory body to a first-class agency, known around the world for its cutting edge innovation and leadership. Her Privacy by Design framework seeks to proactively embed privacy into the design specifications of information technologies and business practices, thereby achieving the strongest protection possible. In October 2010, regulators at the conference of International Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners in Jerusalem unanimously passed a Resolution recognizing Privacy by Design as an essential component of fundamental privacy protection. This was followed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's inclusion of Privacy by Design as one of three recommended practices for protecting online privacy – a major validation of its significance.
In November 2011, Dr. Cavoukian was ranked as one of the top 25 Women of Influence, recognizing her contribution to the Canadian and global economy. In October 2013, she was named one of the top 100 City Innovators Worldwide by UBM Future Cities for her passionate advocacy of Privacy by Design. In December 2013, the Founding Partners of the Respect Network, the world's first peer-to-peer network for personal and business clouds, named Dr. Cavoukian as its first Honorary Architect. In August 2014, Dr. Cavoukian was chosen as one of the 'Power 50' in Canadian Business magazine for her efforts as a privacy champion.
As of July 1, 2014, she began a new position at Ryerson University as the Executive Director of the Privacy and Big Data Institute – Where Big Data meets Big Privacy.
President of Hunton & William's LLP Centre for Information Policy Leadership
Bojana Bellamy has more than 20 years of experience and deep knowledge of global data privacy and cybersecurity law, compliance, and policy. She has a proven industry record in designing strategy, and building and managing data privacy compliance programs. She has been selected to participate in the "Privacy Bridge Project", a new transatlantic initiative that seeks to develop practical solutions to bridge the gap between European and U.S. privacy regimes. She joins approximately 20 distinguished privacy experts from the EU and US.
Prior to joining Hunton & Williams, she served for 12 years as the Global Director of Data Privacy at Accenture. In this position, Ms. Bellamy built and managed a global data privacy team and was responsible for Accenture's data privacy strategy and compliance programs worldwide, with respect to internal operations, and the company's technology, outsourcing and consulting services. She sits on the Advisory Board of the International Data Privacy Law Journal. Ms. Bellamy received her JD from the University of Belgrade; LLM, International Law, University of Belgrade; Diploma of Advanced European Legal Studies, European Union Law, College of Europe; and LLM, European Union Law, European University Institute.
Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission
As Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, Ms. Rich oversees a staff of hundreds of attorneys, investigators, and support staff working to protect consumers from deceptive and unfair practices in the commercial marketplace. The Bureau accomplishes its mission through law enforcement, consumer and business education, and policy initiatives to stop fraud and deceptive advertising, protect privacy, and promote compliance with the consumer protection laws. During her 20+ year tenure at the agency, Ms. Rich has held a number of other senior positions, including Deputy Director of the Bureau, Associate Director of the Division of Financial Practices, and Acting Associate Director of the Division of Privacy and Identity Protection.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the FTC's mission, Ms. Rich has received numerous Commission awards, including the Chairman's Award, the agency's highest award for meritorious service. Ms. Rich started her career in private practice in New York City and is a graduate of Harvard University and New York University Law School.
