The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are sponsoring a two and a half day symposium to explore emerging trends in voting system technology with the diverse election community at large. The sponsoring organizations seek to have lively discussion on the following topics:
- Why some jurisdictions are exploring building their own voting systems
- Trends in voting system technology acquisition and deployment plans
- How election officials, manufactures and academics view the future of voting system technologies
- Alternative standard development processes for voting systems
- Alternative methods for voting system testing and certification at the Federal and State level
The symposium will provide an environment for interactive discussions among the attendees including election officials, voting system manufacturers, voting system test laboratories, standard developers, academics, and Federal, State, and local government officials. The symposium will encourage attendee participation through panel discussions with limited presentations to frame the topics to be explored. The first day of the symposium will explore voting system technology trends seen by election officials, voting system manufacturers. The second day of the symposium will explore alternative ways for voting system standards development, testing, and certification that support the trends identified on the first day. The final half-day will discuss technologies that can lead to more usable, accessible and secure voting systems, and conclude with an open discussion session with the attendees. The discussions for the symposium will be used by the organizations to increase the efficiency and agility of the standardization, testing, and certification processes for future voting system technologies.

Poster and Demonstration Session
The symposium will include a poster and demonstration session held in conjunction with a reception on the evening of the first day of the symposium. Participates with novel voting system technology designs are highly encouraged to submit a poster or demonstration proposal for this session.
Proposals for the poster and demonstration session can be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org. They should include the title of the proposal, a description or summary not to exceed 300 words, and the name, affiliation and e-mail address of the primary submitter.
Individuals proposing demonstrations should include a description of any special needs. In general, submitters are expected to be responsible for all materials necessary to conduct their presentation, but symposium organizers will attempt to make reasonable accommodations on a case-by-case basis.
Submitters of accepted poster proposals must prepare all poster materials in advance of the symposium, and bring all printouts and illustrations. Posters should not exceed 4' by 3' (1.21m by .091m).
