Sieber Receives ASTM Award of Merit
The Award of Merit was established in 1949 by the ASTM Board of Directors and is the highest award granted by the Society to an individual member for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities. Each recipient is elected as a Fellow of the Society.

On February 24, 2016, Ralph M. Paroli, Chairman of the Board of ASTM International, announced that John R. Sieber has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 ASTM International Award of Merit following his nomination by Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials.
A member of Committee E01 since 1999, Sieber is also a member of Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials. He serves as a consultant to Committee D20 on Plastic, Committee C14 on Glass and Glass Products, Committee C01 on Cement and Concrete, Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, the ASTM Proficiency Test Program, and the ASTM Interlaboratory Study Program. Sieber has authored and co-authored numerous new and revised standard methods and standard guides involving elemental analysis of materials, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, test method validation, and reference materials development. Related activities include outreach to reference materials producers and accreditation bodies on behalf of NIST and ASTM E01. In May 2014, Sieber organized a successful NIST/ASTM workshop on the impact of accreditation of reference material producers on availability of CRMs.
In 27 years as a research chemist in NIST's Chemical Sciences Division, Inorganic Measurement Science Group, Sieber’s prior awards from ASTM include the B. F. Scribner Award (2005) and the John L. Hague Award (2013), plus Awards of Appreciation in 2000 from D02 and in 2012 from F40. Both Bourdon Scribner and John Hague were chemists at NBS in the 1930s through the 1970s.
