Regina Avila is a Digital Services Librarian and Data Librarian at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. She joined NIST in 2009 to implement the agency’s NIST Digital Archives, leading a team in the digitization and preservation of the agency’s publications. Since then, her duties have included work to collect oral histories of NIST staff and working with colleagues across NIST to promote public access to the agency's research data. She has successfully collaborated with NIST's IT department and laboratories in curating and publishing research data – including the development of tools to create data management plans, the NIST enterprise data inventory, and data documentation. She is currently working with researchers to curate data for NIST's Disaster and Failure Studies Program.
Ms. Avila earned her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Denver. Before she came to NIST she was a librarian and news researcher at The Denver Post.
2019 Bronze Medal Award - "The team is recognized for developing and deploying an integrated software system that makes it easier for NIST scientists to share their data with the public through a secure cloud-based platform. The system meets NIST requirements for stewardship of research data throughout their lifecycle, including data management planning, review, curation, publication, and preservation, and fully satisfies OMB/OSTP policies for the management and delivery of the results of federally funded research."
