David A. Wollman (Fed)

Deputy Division Chief, Smart Connected Systems Division

Dr. David Wollman serves as Deputy Division Chief, Smart Connected Systems Division, in the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In addition to expanding NIST’s coordination and research activities in cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), and smart cities and communities, Dave leads the Communications Technology Laboratory’s Automated Vehicles program and is the Lab’s champion of the Smart Infrastructure and Manufacturing research focus area. Before joining CTL, he served as Deputy Director, Smart Grid and Cyber-Physical Systems Program Office in the NIST Engineering Laboratory. Prior to that, he managed efforts within the NIST Physical Measurement Laboratory to maintain and advance the Nation's electrical standards and metrology supporting the electric power industry, and he served in several other positions at NIST, including Scientific Advisor for the former Electronics and Electrical Engineering Laboratory, Program Analyst in NIST Director's Program Office, and bench-level scientist in Boulder, Colorado developing advanced high-resolution x-ray detectors.  

Awards and Honors:

  • Department of Commerce Bronze Medal for leadership and unique technical contributions to the fourth release of the NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Framework (2022)
  • Department of Commerce Silver Medal for his leadership of the Green Button Initiative to provide consumers with access to their energy usage information and inform and enable them to reduce energy costs and promote a more sustainable environment (2015)
  • Department of Commerce Gold Medal for his work to develop a globally-recognized smart grid standards framework (2011)
  • Department of Commerce Gold Medal (and NIST Jacob Rabinow Applied Research Award) for his work to develop and demonstrate an high-resolution x-ray microcalorimeter with applications in microanalysis and astronomy (1998)
