Abstract: There are several sources of error in a laser scanner measurement. The optical and material properties of the target, the shape, form, surface texture, color, reflectivity, and orientation of the target in space, environmental effects, etc., all contribute to measurement errors. In this abstract, we address a particular source of systematic error arising from geometric misalignments within the system that result in errors in the measured point coordinates. We describe the different sources of misalignment for one mechanical design and present a geometric error model. Using a manufacturer recommended contrast target, we present results from experiments that demonstrate clear systematic errors. We present possible explanations for the observed errors using the terms from our model. Finally, we discuss arrangement of targets in space that can be employed for the performance evaluation of this scanner.
