Abstract: The accomplishments of the project are summarized in three published studies, which follow this abstract and constitute this final report. The studies use layer by layer assembly methods to investigate material flammability. In the first study, entitled, ,Growth and fire resistance of colloidal silica-polyelectrolyte thin film assemblies,Š thin films of colloidal silica were deposited on cotton fibers via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly in an effort to reduce the flammability of cotton fabric. In the second study, entitled, ,Growth and fire protection behavior of POSS-based multilayer thin films,Š fully siliceous layer-by-layer assembled thin films, using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as building blocks, were successfully deposited on various substrates, including cotton fabric. In the third study, entitled, ,Intumescent All-Polymer Multilayer Nanocoating Capable of Extinguishing Flame on Fabric,Š LbL assemblies of PSP and PAAm were successfully deposited on various substrates, including cotton fabric.
