Abstract
Much work has been done by standards organizations to model dimensional measurement information in digital formats, but the work done has revealed that standard digital formats from upstream processes are currently insufficient to enable the automatic generation of a fully-specified measurement plan for many use cases. In order to assist upstream standards committees, this research defines information required for dimensional measurement, and in particular, identifies which information elements are missing in the standard formats. The upstream information required to perform a dimensional measurement parses logically into four classes of information: design information, quality directives, measurement resources, and measurement rules. A high level description of the information in these four categories is presented, with emphasis on the information modeling work which needs to be performed to enable more efficient and less error prone dimensional metrology processes.
