Abstract: We present spectroscopic measurements of characteristic Kα and Kβ emissions from Mo targets irradiated by a 100 fs, 200 mJ, Ti: sapphire laser with intensity of 1017 W/cm2 to 1018 W/cm2 per pulse. This research pursues novel x-ray sources for medical imaging and appropriate diagnostics for laser-produced x rays. In the present work, we obtained resolving powers (E/ΔE) around 300 for Mo Kα2 at 17.37 keV by using a transmission curved-crystal spectrometer and off-Rowland Circle imaging, while maintaining an end-to-end spectrometer efficiency of (9.69 ± 2.00) × 10-6. This sensitivity is sufficient for registering spectral lines with high signal-to-background from targets following irradiation by a single laser pulse, demonstrating the utility of this diagnostic method in the study of medium-intensity femtosecond laser driven x-ray sources.
