Abstract: Previous industry consensus postulated that four elements of the weather: Temperature, Humidity, Ultraviolet Radiation, and Mechanical loading were responsible for the majority of the changes observed in sealants exposed to outdoor weathering. The NIST SPHERE based weathering device can separately control and monitor each of these four elements for a large number of samples. Using the SPHERE a large database of complex modulus change versus exposure has been compiled. This presentation will detail a statistical analysis of this database to verify that the previous postulation of Temperature, Humidity, UV and Mechanical loading was correct. Additionally, predictions of outdoor weathering based on indoor SPHERE based weathering will be compared to modulus change occurring in outdoor weathered sealant samples.
