Abstract

We recruit students from underrepresented groups and at Colleges and Universities with limited on-campus opportunities for research experience. We strive to provide the highest quality and challenging undergraduate research experience by involving students in direct collaborations with world class researchers who are working on real world metrology problems. The National Institute of Standards and Technology regards our program as an opportunity to both immediately increase staff diversity and as a way to develop a diverse, future generation of researchers trained in metrology. Metrology, or the science of measurement, is a need that cuts across all fields of science and engineering, yet is not often specifically addressed in the undergraduate curriculum. Programs sponsored by the EEC at NIST have included focuses in Manufacturing, Building and Fire Research, and Cross-Disciplinary Electronics.
