Abstract

The goal of this paper is to overview radio-frequency electromagnetic interactions with solid and liquid dielectric and magnetic materials from the macroscale down to the nanoscale. Because this area of research is vast, the paper concentrates on currently active research areas in the megahertz (MHz) through gigahertz (GHz) frequencies. The paper studies interaction mechanisms from both phenomenological and fundamental viewpoints. Models for relaxation, resonance, interface phenomena, plasmons, the concepts of permittivity and permeability, and relaxation times are summarized. Topics of current research interest, such as plasmonic behavior, polariton surface waves, negative-index behavior, noise, heating, nanoscale materials, wave cloaking, biomaterials, and other topics are overviewed.
