|Abstract:||Methods to disperse nanoparticles reproducibly in aqueous solutions compatible with cell-based assays are critical for studying cytotoxicity. Here, we disperse gold and silver nanoparticles in cell culture media, letting them agglomerate to a variety of controlled mean sizes before stopping the agglomeration by adding protein, thereby creating dispersions that are generally stable for at least two days. Several parameters are found to be critical for achieving reproducible dispersions including mixing rate, experimental timing, nanoparticle concentration, and protein concentration. Finally, increasing the agglomerate size of silver nanoparticles is shown to decrease their hemolytic toxicity.|
