Abstract

The paper experimentally quantified the effect of lubricant on horizontal flow boiling of R410A. This was accomplished by first establishing a baseline by measuring the convective boiling heat transfer performance of pure R410A. The heat transfer performance of one R410A/lubricant mixture was then measured to establish the comparison between pure and the mixture. The measured convective boiling Nusselt numbers for the pure refrigerant and refrigerant/lubricant mixture were compared to an existing correlation. An existing correlation was shown to predict the measurements to within 25 %. The degradation in heat transfer performance of the mixture was found to range from 1 % to 40 %. Fluorescence was used to investigate the location of excess lubricant in the annular liquid of the tube. These results are expected to contribute to the improved understanding of the convective boiling process and lead to more fundamentally generalized models.
