450 Golden Gate Project: BACnet's(TM) First Large-Scale Test

Abstract

The Phillip Burton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse located at 450 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco was selected as the site for the world's first large-scale commercial demonstration of the BACnet standard. BACnet is a standard communication demonstration of the BACnet standard. BACnet is a standard communication protocol that permits building control products made by different vendors to be integrated into a single system. The Phillip Burton building is a 22-story, 300,000 square meter office building, the largest Federal office building west of the Mississippi River. Although there are thousands of installed BACnet systems and they can be found in at leas fourteen countries, the 450 Golden Gate Project stands out from all the rest because of its size, the fact that multiple vendors are involved, it includes more than just HVAC control, and it will have a significant impact on how the largest landlord in the world--the U.S. General Services Administration--will manage its buildings in the future. This article provides an overview of the 450 Golden Gate Project's BACnet design, the demonstration team's experiences to date, and offers recommendations for engineers for building owners considering BACnet in their future automation projects.
