Abstract
Linking field and laboratory exposure results and predicting the service life of a polymeric materials exposed in its intended service environment have been major research goals of the polymeric materials community for over a century. Three methodologies are used or have been proffered for generating service life data. Differences in these methodologies are discussed and the state-of-the-art of service life prediction is revealed. Recommendations for improving the predictive capabilities of any proposed service life prediction methodology are made and a number of technical of technical and scientific issues are raised that need to be addressed by the scientific community.
