Surface and Interface Properties of UV-Exposed PVDF/PMMA-CO-PEA Blends

Abstract

The surface and interface of PVDF blended with different amounts of poly (methyl methacrylate) and poly (ethyl acrylate) copolymer (PNMA-co-PEA) have been investigated before and after exposure to UV light. Dry free films having athickness of approximately 100 gm are prepared by casting PVDF/PMMA-co-PEA blends on glass plates by draw down technique. After heating for I0 minutes at 246 degrees C, coated glass plates are cooled down to ambient temperature. The films are exposed to a xenon arc lamp at 50 degrees C after peeling from the glass plates. Both the film side in contact with the air (air surface) and that in contact with the glass substrate (the interface) were characterized with atomic force microscopy. attenuated total reflection-Foun'er transform infrared spectroscopy, confocal Raman microscopy and x-ray photoelectroii spectroscopy. Results have shown an enrichment of the PVDF material at the air surface while the acrylic copolymer enriches the interface. The blends having greater 50 % mass fraction of PVDF show little change in surface morphology after UV exposure for 7 months. However, for a lower PVDF content, significant degradation of PMMA-co-PEA copolymer has been observed and a much rougher surface has occurred after exposure. Microstructural changes in the PVDF spherulites characterized by neutron scattering will be discussed.
