| Title: | The Modified-Single Fiber Test: A Methodology for Monitoring Ballistic Performance |
| Published: | January 18, 2008 |
| Abstract: | In an effort to develop a minimally invasive testing methodology for monitoring the in-service performance of soft body armor, the ASTM D3379-75 standard was modified by measuring the fiber diameter at 5 equally spaced locations along a 6 cm gauge length specimen, and the specimen construction was modified to incorporate reflecting tape to allow the use of a laser extensometer for directly measuring fiber displacement and hence, strain. The modified testing methodology was found to be reproducible and provide data that was normally distributed based on descriptive statistics when variations in the fiber diameters along the length of the specimen were considered. |
