Abstract

NEW:Update 2005, the 20th annual workshops for science and technology educators with the theme, NANO/BIOSCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, was hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology/Materials Science and Engineering Laboratories (NIST/MSEL) and also by faculty, students and staff at the NSF-MERSEC on the campus of University of Maryland (UM) in College Park from October 16 to 19. NIST and UM joined forces to provide conference participants with a unique opportunity to utilize their state-of-the-art conference facilities and tour their state-of-the-art research laboratories. These accommodations coupled with expert speakers, a unique nanoCamp for secondary educators, and the demonstration of numerous experiments by educators from across the nation and beyond all contributed to a successful conference. NEW:Update 2005 involved over 150 participants, including students and teachers, NIST, UM, and other industry researchers. Faculty in attendance represented high schools, community colleges, smaller colleges, and major universities. Undergraduate and graduate students also attended and presented their work. Displays by publishers, technical societies, and equipment suppliers added to the workshop's value. This proceeding CD volume provides information and photographs about the workshop, as well as experiments and demonstrations that can serve as valuable aids to faculty who are interested in useful activities to enhance their classrooms and laboratories.
