Data and Informatics Needs in Biomaterials

Abstract

Biomaterials are nonviable materials used in medical devices, that are intended to interact with biological systems. In 2002 the total U.S. Medical device market stood at $77 billion, with global sales estimated at 2-3 times this figure. Approximately 40 million Americans have a permanent medical implant and/or wear contact lenses. Considering all those who have had dental cavities filled with dental amalgams along with those who have had accidental or surgical wounds closed with sutures, plus persons who swallow tablets of capsules with polymeric coatings, then virtually every American is a consumer of biomaterials. This report examines the current state of biomaterials property data and informatics and identifies needs for future related work. Includes extensive bibliography.
