Validation Testing of ANSI/IEEE N42.43 Standard Requirements for Radiation Detection Backpacks

Abstract

Two gross count radiation detection backpacks were used to validate a subset of the radiological test requirements listed in the ANSI/IEEE N42.43 standard [1]. For this purpose, a linear motion system was used to simulate the relative movement between the backpacks and the radioactive sources. For each source tested, a backpack s response was recorded as alarm or no alarm. A survey meter was used to measure the exposure rate at the backpack location to ensure that background radiation levels were not affected by the presence of the various sources. Data was analyzed to evaluate the standard requirements for this type of instruments, and it was found that some require revision for this type of instrument.
