| Abstract: | Standard Reference material (SRM) 2806 is composed of ISO medium test dust (ISO 12103-A3), a mineral dust, suspended in MIL-H-5606 hydraulic oil. SRM 2806 is a traceable particle count standard and is certified for number of particles larger than a specified size per milliliter of hydraulic oil. The size distribution and concentration of the particles in the SRM are determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with image analysis. SEM in the backscatter electron image mode provides a method of size measurement that allows imaging with high contrast for particles in the 1 micro υ to 100 micro υ size range. Image analysis methods were used to derive the particle size distribution from archived images; these images are available for future reference and analysis. The number distribution found in the existing standard method, ISO 4402 (ISO 4402, 1991), and SRM 2806 are compared. |
