Capabilities and Uncertainties of the Piston Gage Pressure Standards at NIST

Abstract

The National Institute of Standards and Technology operates and maintains piston gage pressure standards from 7 kPa to 280 Mpa, a span of over 4 decades in pressure. Gas capabilities range from 7 kPa to 1000 Mpa, and oil capabilities range from 1 Mpa to 100 Mpa. Uncertainties on the gas standards are lowest around atmospheric pressure, estimated at 13 ppm, and range up to 40 ppm (both at k=2). For the oil gages, the uncertainties range from 18 ppm to 49 ppm (k=2). Effective areas for the gas standards were established through calibration of one of the standards against a gas thermometer manometer, and successive calibrations of higher range standards against lower range standard. Effective areas for the oil standards were determined from characterizations of three controlled clearance primary piston gage standards, and calibration of other standards against those controlled clearance gages.
