| Abstract: | Speech presented to the Japanese Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (JCCLS). The National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) and JCCLS are partners and share the common goal of improving the health care of our nations and the world, and thereby improving the global economy. These remarks are directed to the role of NCCLS and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in voluntary consensus. The objectives of this presentation are to: describe the role of voluntary consensus standards and the importance of consensus; focus on the role of NIST, NCCLS, JCCLS, and ISO/TC 212; emphasize the need for linkage between documentary standards and reference systems; and examine the importance of global harmonization. |
