Abstract

The mission of the mass group of the Automated Production Technology Division at NIST is to maintain the mass unit, disseminate it to U.S. industry, government, and academia, and provide traceability to the International Prototype Kilogram. Efforts are directed at studying the stability of mass standards and at developing improved methods for measurements of mass, solid density and volume. In addition, the group collaborates with the Electricity Division at NIST on experiments aimed at electronically monitoring the stability of the kilogram standard and relating its definition to fundamental constants. Currently, the mass group is upgrading the mass facilities and equipment to provide improved services.
