Abstract: It is shown that angle-resolved valence-band photoemission (PE) spectra of epitaxial close-packed films of U metal may correctly be described within a one-step model of PE based on a band description of the U 5f states. It is found that a cross-section minimum at hv = 90 - 94eV, which previously was assigned to a Fano antiresonance at the 5d {rarr} 5f excitation threshold, is mainly caused by a Cooper-minimum behavior. Analogous cross-section variations in the region of the 5d {rarr} 5f resonances were obtained for a series of other solid actinide systems. The reported results have severe consequences for the general interpretation of resonant PE data.
