OntoSTEP Plugin

ISO 10303, also known as the STandard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP), contains different data models – called Application Protocols (APs) -- that support specific business activity. Examples of widely used APs are the AP2031 and AP2142.

The goal of the OntoSTEP project is to add value to STEP using Semantic Technologies. This goal is achieved by translating the APs defined in the EXPRESS language (ISO 10303-11), and the actual instance files represented using the ISO 10303-21 (or simply part21) format. The target language is the widely used Web Ontology Language (OWL) developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Further details related to this translation are available in the publication, "OntoSTEP: OWL-DL Ontology for STEP," NISTIR 7561.

OntoSTEP is implemented as a plugin for the Protégé 4 OWL Editor. This plugin allows EXPRESS schemas and Part21 files to be imported as TBox (classes) and ABox (individuals) represented in OWL.
