NIST’s Sokwoo Rhee was honored with the Portland Golden Globe Award at the September 2019 Global Tech Jam in Portland, Oregon. The Award is given by the Technology Association of Oregon to honor “companies and individuals for their exemplary work in economic development.”
The second annual Global Tech Jam brought together city and community leaders with innovators from industry, academia, and grass roots organizations to “explore ways to improve the shared health, well-being, security, and prosperity of citizens” through emerging smart city technologies. Participants from across the U.S., Asia, and Europe shared their ideas in plenary and breakout sessions on smart city topics ranging from transportation and public safety to equity and inclusiveness, and the arts and culture.
The award was announced in a keynote session at the Tech Jam to recognize Dr. Rhee’s leadership in launching and shepherding NIST’s Global City Teams Challenge, citing the program as “the most influential organization in the United States Smart City movement in placing our companies in line for well paying jobs, improving the efficiency of our cities, and boosting their economic output.”
