554. Realization of quantum error correction
Topic: Physics
Published: 12/2/2004
Authors: J Chiaverini, Dietrich G Leibfried, Tobias Schaetz, Murray D Barrett, Brad Rodney Blakestad, Joseph Wright Britton, Wayne M Itano, John D. Jost, Emanuel H Knill, C. Langer, R Ozeri, David J Wineland
Abstract: Scalable quantum computation and communication require error control to protect quantum information against unavoidable noise. Quantum error correction protects quantum information stored in two-level quantum systems (qubits) by rectifying errors wit ...

555. The optical calcium frequency standards of PTB and NIST
Topic: Physics
Published: 11/5/2004
Authors: U Sterr, C Degenhardt, H Stoehr, Ch. Lisdat, H Schnatz, J Helmcke, F Riehle, G Wilpers, Christopher W Oates, Leo W. Hollberg
Abstract: We describe the current status of the optical calcium frequency standard with laser-cooled neutral atoms realized in two different laboratories for the purpose of developing a possible future optical atomic clock. Frequency measurements performed at ...

556. Conducting atomic force microscopy for Nanoscale tunnel barrier characterization
Topic: Physics
Published: 8/13/2004
Authors: Kristine Lang, Dustin Alexander Hite, Raymond Wiley Simmonds, Robert McDermott, David P Pappas, John M. Martinis
Abstract: Increasing demands on nanometer scale properties of oxide tunnel barriers necessitate a consistent means to assess them at these lengths. Here we use conducting atomic force microscopy (CAFM) to characterize aluminum oxide (AlOx)barriers to be used i ...

557. Decoherence in Josephson Qubits from Junction Resonances
Topic: Physics
Published: 8/13/2004
Authors: Raymond Wiley Simmonds, Kristine Lang, Dustin Alexander Hite, David P Pappas, John M. Martinis
Abstract: We present experimental data that demonstrates a large reduction in the coherence of a Josephson phase qubit from spurious microwave resonances. These resonances are believed to arise from resonant fluctuators in the tunnel junction that couple to th ...

558. Quantum information processing with trapped ions
Topic: Physics
Published: 7/25/2004
Authors: Murray D Barrett, Tobias Schaetz, J Chiaverini, Dietrich G Leibfried, Joseph Wright Britton, Wayne M Itano, John D. Jost, Emanuel H Knill, C. Langer, R Ozeri, David J Wineland
Abstract: We report experiments on the creation and manipulation ofmulti-particle entangled states of trapped atomic ions. The experiments reported here, quantum dense coding and quantum teleportation, constitute a significant step toward performing large-scal ...

559. Superconducting transition edge sensor using dilute AlMn alloys
Topic: Physics
Published: 7/6/2004
Authors: Steven Deiker, William Bertrand Doriese, Gene C Hilton, Kent D Irwin, William H Rippard, Joel Nathan Ullom, Leila R Vale, Steve T Ruggiero, Anthony Williams, B. Young
Abstract: We have fabricated a bolometer using a transition-edge sensor (TES) made of Al doped with Mn to suppress the superconducting critical temperature !Tc" of Al from #1 K to #100 mK. The resulting detector exhibits low-frequency noise consistent with t ...

560. Extremely low noise microwave signals synthesized from stable CW lasers with femtosecond laser frequency combs
Topic: Physics
Published: 5/17/2004
Authors: A Bartels, Scott A Diddams, Christopher W Oates, G Wilpers, Windell Oskay, James C Bergquist, Leo W. Hollberg
Abstract: A femtosecond laser frequency comb transfers the low phase and frequency noise of a cavity-stabilized CW laser to the microwave domain. Phase noise of -115 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset from the 1 GHz carrier is achieved.
