Abstract

Transformative Apps (TransApps) is a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funded program whose goal is to develop a range of militarily-relevant software applications ("apps") to enhance the operational effectiveness of military personnel on (and off) the battlefield. A team from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is responsible for designing and implementing the testing and evaluation methods for ~60 software apps for the Android-powered smartphone platforms as well as software-hardware interaction. This paper focuses on the new test methods developed by the NIST team for comparing AndroidTM-powered devices in consideration of becoming future TransApps devices. These test methods include Camera Usability, GPS Accuracy and Timing metrics, Compass Accuracy, and Display Usability. The results of these test methods allow the program to be more informed in the purchasing decisions for future TransApps devices.
