Abstract

Graphene oxides are potentially a new class of nanomaterial to enhance multifunctional properties of polymers because of their remarkable thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and more importantly, low cost. The graphene oxides, produced by exfoliation of graphite oxide (GO), bear a substantial amount of hydroxyl and other oxygen groups on the basal planes and at the edges. These materials are hydrophilic, thus allowing them to be dispersed readily in water. Here, we report the performance of graphene oxide as a reinforcing nanofiller for water-based polyurethane polymers. Composite films of a one-part water-borne polyurethane containing different levels of graphene oxides from (0 to 2) % mass fraction were prepared by sonification/mixing/degassing then drawing down. raphene oxide sheets are well dispersed in, and have good adhesion, with water-borne PU. This nanofiller markedly increases the modulus and yield strength of this polyurethane. Further, incorporation of graphene oxide sheets substantially reduces oxygen permeability and increases the thermal stability of this water-borne PU. In summary, graphene oxide sheets with their high-aspect ratio and exceptional properties is a good candidate for improving performance properties of water-borne polyurethane coatings.
