Abstract

Among the approaches that the Structural Engineers Association of California has recommended for performance based seismic design is the energy approach. In this approach, the earthquake input energy transmitted to the structure is estimated from ground motion and then distributed to various structural elements and damping devices to be dissipated. This study is concerned with the examination of earthquake input energy. A literature survey was carried out to identify the existing procedures for computing input energy. The study presents input energy spectra computed from time history and response spectra. The influences of ductility and damping on input energy and its components such as kinetic, damping, elastic strain, and hysteretic energy are examined. Input energy equivalent to hazard levels specified in the NEHRP Recommended Provisions for Seismic Regulations for New Buildings and Other Structures (FEMA 302 and 303) was computed and compared to those from time history of selected ground motions.
