Abstract: Gas-filled capacitors are being used as primary thermometers and they show promise as primary pressure standards and for measuring the Boltzmann constant. With these metrological applications in mind, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of audio-frequency coaxial capacitors and cross capacitors, radio-frequency re-entrant resonators, and microwave-frequency, quasi-spherical resonators for measuring the dielectric permittivity of the monatomic gases. This discussion reflects the authors experience; it is not intended to be a comprehensive review.
