Realizing the Potential of Quantum Information Science and Advancing High-Performance Computing

The White House announced today a new report from the National Science and Technology Council on challenges, opportunities and the path forward in quantum information science, including a plan for high-performance computing.

As described in a White House blog post from the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Advancing Quantum Information Science: National Challenges and Opportunities is the product of an interagency working group that was created to assess the current status of the field, coordinate activities across the relevant federal agencies, engage stakeholders and consider ways to address impediments and facilitate progress in quantum information science (QIS).

The report highlights the National Institute of Standards and Technology's more than 20 years of work in QIS, including research achievements and current efforts in quantum-based sensors and measurement, the National Strategic Computing Initiative, and the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) and Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS), which are both based at the University of Maryland, College Park.
