SURF students participate in the SURF program at the headquarters site of the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). NIST is located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the center of Washington, D.C. Housing arrangements have been made with a local hotel for the SURF students to share fully furnished bedroom (containing 2 full beds) and a full bathroom. Students should expect to share a bedroom with one other person.
The cost of housing is provided in the fellowship grant and is paid for by the school before check-in. Instructions will be provided to accepted students a month before the official program start date. Housing will be ready for occupancy on May 26, 2018. Rooms must be vacated by noon on August 11, 2018. (Students on academic quarter systems who will start the SURF program after May 29 must still vacate by August 11. These students will be responsible for arranging their own housing after August 11.)
The provided lodging is equipped with phone, TV, linens, microwave, refrigerator, and includes use of swimming pools, basketball court, and workout facilities. They even offer free continental breakfasts each day! The location is usually a short distance away from NIST and within walking distance of stores, restaurants, and the local subway stop. It is well served by public bus routes that extend to all parts of area. If you would like to bring a car there is plenty of free parking. Direct bus transportation from these apartments to and from the NIST campus may be provided.
The Washington Metropolitan area is rich in cultural and recreational opportunities. The provided lodging are just a short commute from the nation's capital, theaters, movies, restaurants, evening entertainment, historical and cultural sites, museums, shopping, and many local universities.
