Financial Support

SURF participants receive the following financial support:​​

  • Stipend =$5500 for an 11-week appointment or $500 per week (Note: Students are expected to work 40 hours per week /Monday though Friday.)
  • Travel allowance (up to $600 ) for students traveling to/from  NIST and do not have a permanent address within the local commuting area (approximately 50-miles from NIST).
  • Housing allowance (up to $3500) for students who do not have a permanent address within the local commuting area. Students are responsible for arranging their housing. 
  • Commuting subsidy available to students who live within the local commuting area of NIST and uses public transportation (Metro, Marc, or bus) to commute to/from NIST daily. Note: Students receiving a housing allowance are not eligible for the commuting subsidy.

    ***Note: Payments for stipend and travel/housing allowance will be disbursed electronically by NIST to participants. All participants are required to provide NIST with direct deposit information.
