Abstract
Wavelength calibration for the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope is provided by an onboard Pt/Cr-Ne hollow cathode lamp. The Space Telescope-European Coordinating Facility (ST-ECF) is currently conducting a project to improve the STIS wavelength calibration by using physical instrument models. The existing laboratory description of the lamp output has proved to be inadequate to support this new calibration concept. This article reviews the issues surrounding the wavelength calibration for STIS and describes new observations of the Pt/Cr-Ne hollow cathode lamp made with the 10.7 m normal incidence spectrograph at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
