The NIST Research Library assigns a Lab Librarian to each NIST laboratory. Lab Librarians provide customized research support and serve as their Lab’s strategic research partner. They respond to their Lab’s unique information needs, providing free information services. Lab Librarians work closely with NIST staff to understand their research and collaborate in ways that help them maximize their impact. They draw on the resources and expertise of the entire NIST Research Library and Information Services Office.
Some of the areas where Lab Librarians assist NIST staff include:
Targeted Research Support: Lab librarians conduct research for their Labs using the Library's print and electronic collections and resources, locating targeted information well beyond Google.
Data Services: Data librarians help researchers make choices about curating and preserving research data, and provide information about NIST public access policies. They are consulted by NIST staff regarding trends in publishing and citing data.
Data Visualization: Library staff creatively visualize publications data for NIST staff, providing new insights into publication impacts. They also help researchers strategize the best way to visualize their research data.
Industry/Market Analysis: Lab Librarians analyze market data, identify market growth potential, help identify collaborators, and more. They help researchers get a feel for the research landscape in new and emerging fields.
Publications Analysis: Lab librarians use bibliometrics and other tools to evaluate publications and make recommendations to maximize NIST’s impact. They offer metrics and techniques beyond citation counts and the h-index.
Identifying Emerging Research Areas: Librarians are using citation network analyses to identify emerging research areas where NIST can have the greatest impact on industry and society.
Historical Research and Exhibits: Librarians contribute to historical accounts of NIST’s research and accomplishments through the creation and management of digital archives and exhibits.
