Group cites need for more cybersecurity professionals

July 20, 2020

Cybersecurity professionals remain in high demand even as the US grapples with the Covid-19 pandemic and the supply of such workers remains low. US employers advertised nearly 508,000 job openings for cybersecurity workers between June 2019 and May 2020, and that is in addition to the 922,720 workers already employed in cybersecurity jobs during the same time period.

The data comes from CyberSeek, a cybersecurity workforce analytics and career planning platform. It’s a joint program between the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education; the National Institute of Standards and Technology; Burning Glass Technologies; and CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the global technology industry.

“Cybersecurity professionals have always been vital to protecting our data, devices and networks, but their role has been elevated during the global pandemic,” said Randi Parker, senior director for partner engagement with Creating IT Futures, CompTIA’s leading charity.

CyberSeek listed common feeder roles for cybersecurity professionals, such as software development and systems engineering, as well as core cybersecurity roles such as cybersecurity architect.

It also included a heat map of jobs for cybersecurity professionals across the US.
