Sensor Science Division Employment and Research Opportunities

Division Staff and Postdoctoral Position Opportunities (posted February 2024)

Research Staff Physicist: Full-time permanent staff member to develop accurate optical radiation measurement methods and detector responsivity calibration instruments.

Research Staff Physicist: The Temperature and Humidity Group at NIST seeks a full-time permanent staff member to advance temperature measurements.

Research Staff Physicist: Full-time staff member to develop cryogenic radiometers, novel detectors, and calibration methods for accurate measurements of infrared radiation.

Postdoc in Light-Scatter Nanoscopy of Gene Delivery Particles: Seeking a postdoctoral researcher to design, build, and model light-scattering microscopes to characterize individual gene delivery particles.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Postdoctoral researcher will design and assemble infrared spectrometer, analyze its performance with far-infrared lasers and optical frequency combs.

EUV Scatterometry Team Member: Assist in the design, construction, calibration, operation, and data analysis of a revolutionary extreme-ultraviolet scatterometry tool.

NRC Postdoctoral Opportunities

In cooperation with the National Research Council (NRC), NIST offers awards to doctoral-level scientists and engineers to apply their knowledge and talents to research projects of interest to NIST. Eligible candidates must be US citizens, unless a candidate is applying for a joint NIST/NIH postdoctoral fellowship. Application deadlines are February 1 and August 1 of every year.

For more information about the program, please refer to the NRC Research Associateship Program (RAP).

For a list of currently available opportunities in the Sensor Science Division, view the Sensor Science Division Postdoc Brochure or use the NRC RAP search engine.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF)

In partnership with the National Science Foundation and participating colleges and universities, NIST offers undergraduate fellowships to participate in hands-on research during the summer. The application deadline is typically in mid-winter.

For more information about the program, please refer to the SURF website.

Visiting Scientists Positions, Guest Researcher, etc.

International Guest Researchers: The Sensor Science Division occasionally has opportunities for post-doctoral level researchers from outside the US to work in collaboration with NIST scientists. The duration of the stay at NIST can vary from several months up to three years. Specific opportunities depend on current areas of interest within the Division and may change from year to year.
