Staff Bio

Megan received her Ph.D. in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology from Johns Hopkins in December of 2014.  For her Ph.D. project, she performed a systematic survey (using exon arrays) of transcription factor expression during mouse pancreas development (as a function of developmental stage and tissue localization).  This resulted in the identification of two differentially expressed transcription factors potentially driving early pancreas differentiation.

In her work at NIST, Megan will be developing clinical standards related to genetic testing techniques such as digital PCR and next-generation sequencing. Additionally, she is working with the Genome in a Bottle (GiaB) consortium to examine results from targeted sequencing panels on GiaB benchmark genomes. Targeted sequencing panels may offer a cost effective way of characterizing a high number of clinically important genomic regions.

Staff Bio

Lisa Borsuk received her master of science at Iowa State University in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in 2007.  After graduation she worked for a small startup biotech company which did sequencing and sequence analysis.  She started at NIST in Aug. 2015 in the Applied Genetics Group working on sequence analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) of short tandem repeats (STR).  She has also worked on developing and migrating computer programs to analyze forensic genotyping and sequencing data.

Staff Bio

Margaret worked for the Frederick Cancer Research Facility from1979 – 1985 where she conducted research in the isolation, and purification of novel anti-tumor antibiotics from fermentation broths.  Also, scaled-up isolation procedures from lab-scale to pilot-plant recovery scale. In 1985 she joined NIST to coordinate dispatching, receiving, storing, and processing of fat soluble vitamins in serum for a National Cancer Institute interagency program.  Which lead to her producing SRMs 968, 968a, 968b and 968c.

She started working on the PCR amplification of DNA for human identification in 1986 which has led to her interests in producing SRM 2391, SRM 2391a, SRM 2391b and SRM 2391c, for PCR technologies, and SRM 2372 for human DNA quantitation. Additionally, she has interest in conducting Interlaboratory Studies, Sanger sequencing variant STR samples, and qualifying digital PCR as a primary method of certifying quantitative SRMs of human DNA and plasmid DNA of viruses of clinical interest

Awards

2014 Judson C. French Award for SRM 2372

2008 Department of Commerce Gold Medal Award.
For research and measurement services in the area of human identity testing to support the criminal justice, legal, and disaster recovery communities.
2000 W.J. Youden Award in Interlaboratory Testing, American Statistical Association,
1995 Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award.
For the development of SRM 2391, PCR-based DNA Profiling Standard which provides quality assurance for forensics and other human identification efforts.
1995 SRMP Measurement Services Award. For outstanding research and development and certification of SRM 2391, PCR-based DNA Profiling Standard.
1991 SRMP Measurement Services Award. For contributions to the formulation of materials and the analysis of data leading to the certification of SRMs 968 and 968a, Fat Soluble Vitamins in Human Serum.
