Dr. Nathan D. Marsh is a chemical engineer in the Flammability Reduction Group (FRG) of the Fire Research Division (FRD) of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Marsh received his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University, where he studied the toxic products from the combustion of various fuels. Before joining NIST in 2006, Dr. Marsh worked as a research associate at the University of Utah's Center for the Simulation of Accidental Fires and Explosions, where he studied soot formation, structure, and optical properties with a focus on the role soot particles play in radiatively transferring energy from fires to their surroundings.
Dr. Marsh's current research involves toxic products produced by burning construction and furnishing materials, fire growth and spread, and sensors for the detection of smoke and hydrogen.
Dr. Marsh is the author of 15 peer-reviewed archival journal articles and numerous conference presentations. He is a member of the Combustion Institute and the National Fire Protection Association.
