Gail Porter

Gail Porter is Director of the NIST Public Affairs Office, which includes programs for media relations, Web content development and production, social media, video production, internal communications, general publications, conference and audiovisual services, and public inquiries. She has 35 years of experience as a public affairs manager editor, and writer specializing in communicating with the media and the public about science and engineering research. During her more than 25-year career at NIST she has also served as editor of NIST TechBeat and NIST Technology at a Glance.

Prior to coming to NIST, Porter was director of the News and Public Information Office for the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering. She is a founding member of the D.C. Science Writers Association and a past president of the organization. She is also a member of the National Association of Science Writers.

Porter earned an M.A. in journalism from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in English from the University of Delaware. She was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal in 1993 for "outstanding contributions to NIST''s technology development and commercialization goals."
